Three of this year's Oscar contenders — Sylvester Stallone ("Creed"), Will Smith ("Concussion") and Elizabeth Banks ("Love and Mercy") — have something interesting in common. They're all former "winners" at the Golden Raspberry Awards. Which of these is the likeliest to follow in the footsteps of Ben Affleck, who last year became the first recipient of the all-new Razzie Redeemer Award which offers former Razzie favorites a chance at redemption? Vote in our new poll below.
Stallone is earning raves for his comeback performance as Rocky Balboa in the seventh film in the "Rocky" franchise; in fact, five of our Experts drawn from major media outlets think he will win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. This would be a welcome change for Stallone, who at current count has more than 30 Razzie nominations to his name including Worst Actor of the Century in 2000.
"If Stallone were to 'win' for Redeemer, yes, we would invite him to attend and accept," Razzie Awards chief John Wilson tells Gold Derby. "As for his Oscar chances, the fact that he is not a SAG nominee for the performance diminishes his prospects."
Smith's transformative performance in "Concussion" as the doctor who discovers a brain disease affecting NFL players comes just two years after he "won" Razzies for Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Screen Combo for "After Earth." Five of our Experts believe Smith will be nominated at the Oscars for "Concussion," but can he take down Stallone to win the Razzie Redeemer?
After "winning" a Razzie in 2013 for co-directing "Movie 43," Banks is now in the Oscar discussion for "Love and Mercy," for which two of our Experts think she will earn a bid. Also in Banks' favor, she directed "Pitch Perfect 2," the year's highest grossing film by a female director, earned an Emmy nomination for "Modern Family" and concluded her role as Effie Trinket in "The Hunger Games."
Two other potential Redeemer contenders in the discussion this year are "The Visit" director M. Night Shyamalan, who previously took home Razzies for "The Last Airbender" and "Lady in the Water," and Caitlyn Jenner, a former Razzie nominee for "Can't Stop the Music" who ends 2015 as Barbara Walters' most fascinating person of the year.
