It was a good night for Gold Derby predictions when the top 16 performed on "So You Think You Can Dance." Our racetrack odds correctly forecast three out of the four results: the eliminations of Asaf Goren (Team Street) and Marissa Milele (Team Stage), and that Ariana Crowder would be among the bottom three street dancers but saved. We thought Edson Juarez would also be one of the bottom dancers, like he was last week, but viewers unexpectedly rallied around him and he sailed through to the next round.

But there was a bigger surprise on Monday night, and it was announced at the start of the show: stage dancer Derek Piquette injured his back while preparing for an Argentine tango with Jessica "J.J." Rabone and wasn't able to perform during the live show. However, he didn't withdraw from the competition completely. He'll dance again next week – provided his back is healed – but he'll automatically be in the bottom three when he does.
Will that make it easier to predict next week's show? Maybe not. We know for sure that Piquette will be at the bottom, but don't know if he'll stay or go. He'll have his work cut out for him because there will be four eliminations instead of just two next week, as the show narrows down the contest to the top 10. So having to sit out this week's show could be an insurmountable disadvantage.
Then again, he was saved from the bottom three by Twitter users this week without even performing, so he may just make it to the top 10 after all.
Because Gold Derby's odds were so accurate overall this week, five users scored 100% predicting the results: Phoenix, Bgentry, Jomilo21, Jeannag and Irishmovielover4ever. That means the top of this week's leaderboard was decided by how wisely they placed their bets.
It was Phoenix who made the savviest bets, scoring 4,400 points, well above second-place Bgentry with 1,456 points. That's because Phoenix placed 500 points on Goren's elimination from Team Street. Though Goren was by far the frontrunner to be eliminated, Phoenix locked in that prediction when Goren had 5/1 odds, which resulted in a payout of 2,500 points, more than enough to push her over the top. Phoenix picked up another 1,100 points by predicting Crowder would be at the bottom but safe; she bet 200 points on her when she had 11/2 odds.
That illustrates just how important it is not only to make your predictions but to use your big bets wisely. You can place one bet of 500 points and two of 200 points. If you bet big on a long shot and get it right, that could be the difference between winning and losing our weekly predictions contest.
On our overall leaderboard for the season, Sam Eckmann holds on to the top spot with 50% accuracy after three weeks. He's followed by five users with 42% accuracy: EmmyLoser, Brulash82, Jason Nolette, Benutty and Pablom198.
