23-year-old b-boy Asaf Goren was a late addition to Team Street on "So You Think You Can Dance." On the first night of live performances, it was announced that he would compete as a last-minute substitute for Alain "Hurrikane" Lauture, who was injured. Now, after three weeks of competition, do you think he has earned his spot, or should he have been sent home by now? Vote in our poll below, then let us know who will be eliminated next week for a chance to win $100 in our predictions contest.
From the very beginning, it was clear that Goren was struggling with choreography, so much so that team captain Twitch had to pull him aside for pep talks or reprimands more than once, as shown in training-week clip packages. Twitch didn't have to give him a stern talking to this week, but maybe he should have. Goren's club cha cha with Marissa Milele earned him his worst critiques yet from judges. (Watch it below.)
Nigel Lythgoe couldn't see any recognizable cha cha in the routine, and of Goren he remarked that "even the ugliest old caterpillar eventually turns into a beautiful butterfly" – and that was him looking on the bright side.
The best Paula Abdul could muster was an "A for effort," while Jason Derulo told the hunky break-dancer, "You gotta flex your muscles right now to get some votes, because you're going to have a tough time."
So it was surprising at the end of the show, when Goren and fellow b-boy Burim Jusufi were the bottom two contestants on Team Street, that the judges elected to save Goren. The judges had just praised Jusufi for his African jazz number with Ariana Crowder and Gaby Diaz; like Goren, Jusufi had struggled to learn his steps, but his live performance was much better received.
So why did the judges save Goren after giving him some of the worst reviews this season so far? Do they see untapped potential? Are they eagerly waiting for the butterfly to emerge from the ugly caterpillar?
Denton Davidson, who won our "SYTYCD" predictions contest last summer and currently ranks third on our overall leaderboard for season 12, handicapped the contestants at the beginning of the season, and he highly ranked Lily Frias and Jusufi on Team Street, writing that "I think the judges and choreographers like [Jusufi] more than Asaf." But those promising performers were the first two let go, while Goren remains.
What do you think? Will Goren be the next dancer to get the axe? Should he have been ousted already? Below, watch his club cha cha from Monday night, vote in our poll and make your predictions.
