Ariana Crowder can't get no respect. Representing Team Street this season on "So You Think You Can Dance," the 22-year-old hip-hop specialist from Somerset, New Jersey, has landed in the bottom three every week since live eliminations began. But why?
She has certainly won over the judges. After her depression-themed contemporary routine with Jim Nowakowski on Monday night (watch it below), Nigel Lythgoe gave her a standing ovation and said, "For some reason, you've had problems connecting with the audience on this series, Ariana. I don't know why, because you're doing brilliantly every single week as far as I'm concerned."
I'm inclined to agree. It takes a lot for a dancer to hold her own alongside Nowakowski, one of this season's frontrunners, but Crowder did it. She also impressed during "Top 18" week with an African jazz number alongside Gaby Diaz and Burim Jusufi, and also during "Top 20" week with another jazz number joined by Derek Piquette. In fact, the street dancer has only performed one street dance since live shows began (her very first, with Yorelis Apolinario and Virgil Gadson), but even outside her comfort zone she has performed admirably.
But viewers keep letting her down, and with four contestants set to be eliminated next Monday, is there any way she'll make it to the top 10?
It's looking dire. According to our racetrack odds, Crowder will be eliminated from Team Street, along with Jessica "J.J." Rabone. But there's a glimmer of hope: while 48% of users say Crowder will be sent home, another 38% say she'll be in the bottom but safe. Both groups can't be right.
