As of this writing, Taylor Swift is the Grammy frontrunner for both Album of the Year (“1989“) and Song of the Year (“Blank Space“) according to readers who have entered our predictions contest. But will she reap the most nominations this year? Our forum posters, many of whom are music insiders, aren’t so sure.
The Grammys aren’t like the Oscars, where the most nominations can indicate stronger support in the top categories. Consider that Beck won Album of the Year last year for “Morning Phase” despite only four bids in all. That’s because artists can pad their totals with extra nominations as featured artists, writers, producers and more. Many of our forum posters think that benefits Kendrick Lamar.
What do you think? Below, read comments from our forums and then cast your vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
RinoloTwenty-two: Kendrick Lamar or The Weeknd by far, expecting at least 7 nominations for each guy. I’m going with Kendrick. You’re forgetting Kendrick could be nominated for Music Video for “Bad Blood” and “Alright” or even “Never Catch Me.” Also, he is credited as art director for the album cover, and I can see him nominated for Recording Package.
smurty11: I think Kendrick. I also feel like he’ll sweep too. His name in the industry is really big right now. Taylor’s got the sales, but she’s at this overexposed space that could leave her going home empty-handed on Grammy night. I hope this doesn’t happen. She deserves Pop Vocal Album at least.
PoweR: Kendrick is at a Kanye/Jay-Z point where he can double up on nominations in the rap field, to be honest. I can see “Alright” and “King Kunta” up for Best Rap Song, for example.
Jade: Most likely Kendrick. If not, then The Weeknd.
Stripped: Kendrick Lamar seems poised to lead the nominations. Followed by The Weeknd and Taylor Swift.
