On Sunday’s seventh season premiere of “The Good Wife,” new addition Margo Martindale proved why she’s a two-time Emmy winner. The veteran actress chewed up the scenery with aplomb, dominating all of her scenes with cast members Julianna Margulies, Chris Noth and especially Alan Cumming. Will her new guest role bring her Emmy #3, following victories for “Justified” (supporting, 2011) and “The Americans” (guest, 2015)?

Margo Martindale shocks with short ‘The Americans’ performance to win Drama Guest Actress

Martindale plays political strategist Ruth Eastman in the episode titled “Bond,” who’s brought in to help run Peter’s presidential campaign in place of Eli, who’s been at Peter’s side for years. Eli is so upset at being replaced that he vows to take both Ruth and Peter down. The episode is written by creators Robert King and Michelle King and directed by Brooke Kennedy.

Ironically, in her first “Good Wife” appearance, Martindale has more impact, screen time and range than she had in the entire third season of “The Americans” for which she earned an Emmy. If Martindale is nominated at next year’s Emmys for this new performance, we could see her soar to the finish line and win her third trophy.

Fans of “The Good Wife” have been eagerly anticipating the new season ever since Cumming teased Eli’s storyline to Gold Derby in our Emmy video chat. “Margo Martindale is my nemesis,” Cumming revealed back in August. “Something happens to Eli in the first episode that just changes everything. I mean, it’s really great. I’m actually more excited about my storyline in these first three episodes of this season than I have been for a couple of seasons.”
