“It was funny and moving in equal meaure. I think I share a humor with Alex (that) deflects things with sarcasm and glibness sometimes, which I’m probably guilty of,” admits Tommy Dewey as we chat via webcam (watch below) about his character Alex Cole on the new comedy series “Casual.” He adds, “He’s a great listener and a guy that really has his ear to the ground in terms of how language ebbs and flows. It was really easy to learn which is usually an indication that the writing is solid.”
Alex is the co-founder of the dating website Snooger, which he uses to find attractive women. His older sister Valerie (Michaela Watkins), a recently divorced woman with a teenage daughter (Tara Lynne Barr), moves in with her bachelor brother. With virtually no limitations on streaming website Hulu, this freshman program features its fair share of sex, nudity, and adult themes. The show is executive produced by Oscar nominee Jason Reitman (“Juno,” “Up in the Air”).
The ninth episode of the first season titled “Mars” was one that Dewey especially found surprising in the development of the characters and plot. He reveals that it “was like ice water in the face” when (SPOILER ALERT) “Valerie crosses a line and ends up with my girlfriend. It really throws us into a tailspin. That’s a moment where Alex and Valerie cross paths or switch roles. He’s been the generator of chaos for the most part up to that point, and then she’s the one in that ninth episode that throws a wrench into everything.”
This series marks Dewey’s first leading role after a slew of guest appearances over the past decade on such popular programs as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Mad Men,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Hot in Cleveland,” and “The Mindy Project.”
