American Music Awards predictions 2016: Twenty One Pilots will win Favorite Alternative Rock Artist

Favorite Alternative Rock Artist is guaranteed to go to a first-time winner at the 2016 American Music Awards. None of the three nominees have ever won before, but it looks like Twenty One Pilots are the band to beat according to our predictions contest entrants. Twenty One Pilots get leading 5/6 odds. They’re the only nominees in this category with any other bids: they’re also up for Pop/Rock Duo or Group, and they were even among the top 10 contenders for Artist of the Year until that category was narrowed down to the final five earlier this week, leaving them out. It’s hard to know what that will mean for their popularity in this contest.

Meanwhile, Coldplay have been waiting in the wings for more than a decade. Their first AMA nomination came in 2005 in this category (they lost to Green Day). They received another four nominations in 2008, including Artist of the Year, but they went away empty handed again. They’re finally back at the AMAs eight years later hoping to pick up their first award, and they’re a strong second in our predictions with 13/5 odds.

X Ambassadors are underdogs: they trail with 9/2 odds. The group came to fame in 2015 with their debut album “VHS” and their platinum singles “Renegades” and “Unsteady.” But that might not be enough to overtake the frontrunners in this race.
