Film Independent has announced key dates for its upcoming 2017 Spirit Awards. Honoring the best in American independent film, the Spirit Awards will present their nominations on Tuesday, November 22, at a press conference at the W Hotel hosted by Edgar Ramirez and Jenny Slate. Winners will then be presented on February 25, 2017, at a ceremony that will air once again on IFC.
Josh Welsh, president of Film Independent, said in a statement, “Edgar Ramirez and Jenny Slate are the perfect duo to announce this year’s Spirit Award nominees. Looking at the all films this year, it’s clear that artist-driven film is alive and well and we look forward to celebrating with the independent film community on the beach on February 25th and on IFC! Once again the show will be back in the capable hands of Emmy Award nominated EP and Director Joel Gallen.”
Slate was nominated for a Spirit Award in 2014 for her lead role in the indie comedy “Obvious Child.” Ramirez has yet to be nominated at the Spirit Awards, but he did earn Emmy and Golden Globe bids for playing the title role in the miniseries “Carlos,” in addition to his roles in “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Joy” and more.
Last year’s Spirit Awards previewed the Oscars be awarding “Spotlight” as Best Picture and Brie Larson (“Room”) as Best Actress, though Film Independent was much more fond of “Beasts of No Nation” and “Tangerine” than the motion picture academy turned out to be. How will this year’s nominees and winners compare?
