“You remind me of one of my favorite contestants: Remember Emmitt Smith?” said “Dancing with the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba in response to Calvin Johnson‘s skeletal quickstep on “Halloween Night.” That’s high praise indeed — Emmitt Smith won season three of “DWTS” back in 2006, and he ranks among our top 10 favorite contestants ever. Will Johnson follow Smith’s footsteps by winning the Mirror Ball Trophy? Watch his dance above.
Johnson received perfect 10s from all of the judges, for a total of 30 out of 30 — his first perfect score of the season. That’s usually enough for the top of the judges’ leaderboard, but the format of “Halloween Night” was a little different. Laurie Hernandez and James Hinchcliffe also received perfect scores, but Hinchcliffe had the highest cumulative judges’ scores for the season so far, so he got immunity plus five bonus points added to his total. Then Johnson lost a head-to-head dance-off against Hernandez, which gave Hernandez three bonus points. As a result, Johnson had to settle for third place for the night, but he’s probably not too sad about the result. A perfect score and a comparison to one of the show’s earliest champions — not a bad way to spend the night.
