“A truly magical Halloween treat,” said “Dancing with the Stars” judge Bruno Tonioli about Laurie Hernandez‘s “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”-themed Viennese waltz on “Halloween Night.” The Olympic gymnast and frontrunner to win the Mirror Ball Trophy received perfect 10s from the panel of judges for a perfect 30 out of 30, which returns Hernandez to peak form after a few weeks of seeing her scores slip.
That must have been a relief to Hernandez’s partner Val Chmerkovskiy. The clip package on Monday night showed him on the verge of tears out of fear of letting down his celeb partner. After they received the season’s first perfect score for their Michael Jackson jazz routine on “Cirque du Soleil Night” they have struggled to get back to the top of the leaderboard, and Chmerkovskiy feared his choreography and coaching weren’t rising to the occasion.
Well, he and Hernandez certainly rose to the occasion this week. Carrie Ann Inaba told them, “You brought me to tears … There was something so magical happening.” And Julianne Hough marveled that “your quality of dancing in this competition is so high.” Despite their perfect score they didn’t end up on top of the judges’ leaderboard, but that’s only because her Mirror Ball rival James Hinchcliffe also got a perfect score and his higher cumulative scores for the season so far were the tie-breaker for immunity — he also got five bonus points for his effort.
Despite falling just short of Hinchcliffe this week, do you still think Hernandez will win the “DWTS” Mirror Ball Trophy? Watch her waltz above and let us know in our predictions center.
