As predicted by our exclusive Gold Derby odds, TV journalist Geraldo Rivera was the first eliminated from the competition after landing at the bottom of the judges’ scores in week one. He received 13 out of 30 points for his season premiere dance, which was ultimately too great a deficit for him to overcome with viewer votes.
We had given Rivera 8/15 odds of elimination (66% chance), so most of our users got that question right. But even those of us who weren’t sure he would be sent home were pretty sure he’d get the lowest score for the second week in a row; with 2/9 odds and an 82% chance of landing at the bottom, Rivera’s low score was the safest bet of the night, and indeed he delivered another 13-point performance, finishing just under actress Mischa Barton (15).
The bigger surprises of the night came from who among the season’s early standouts excelled — and who didn’t. Football player Antonio Brown was the frontrunner going into week one, and model Nyle DiMarco took over the top spot going into week two, but both of them got mixed reviews from the judges this week, and both for performing the same dance — the rumba. After DiMarco tied for the top judges’ score in the season premiere, we thought he would lead again this week, but he tied for fifth place with 20 points. Brown only scored one point less (19), but that was enough to drop him to ninth place for the night, tied with actress Kim Fields.
Perhaps we’ve been looking in the wrong place for the “DWTS” frontrunner all along, because for the second week Boyz II Men singer Wanya Morris finished in a tie for the top score (24 points) despite being underestimated by our predictors — we gave him 16/1 odds, which meant just a 6% chance of getting the high score.
We also underestimated the contestant who tied Morris at the top: UFC fighter Paige VanZant, whom we gave 11/1 odds (8% chance) of receiving the high score. She had performed well in week one, but markedly improved in her second outing with a showstopping salsa routine — interestingly, that was the same dance style Morris performed. VanZant’s excellence was even more impressive since she wasn’t able to dance with her pro partner Mark Ballas. He injured his back during rehearsals, so “DWTS” troupe member Alan Bersten took his place at the last minute.
Congratulations to Jason Nolette for earning the top score in this week’s contest. He is one of six contest entrants to reap perfect 100% accuracy predicting all of the questions for this episode, though he broke that tie with his high 19,908.33 point score thanks to locking in the best odds throughout the week. He got his biggest windfall by betting 200 points on Morris as the night’s top scorer at 80/1 odds; that alone resulted in a 16,000-point payout. If eligible, as per our contest rules, he will win a $100 Amazon gift certificate.
After two weeks of competition, there is now a three-way tie for the best user predictions so far: Tommy, Jeredshaffer and Kyle Bailey have all scored 88% so far (seven out of eight predictions correct), but there’s a long way to go before we crown a predictions champ, just as there’s a long way to go before “DWTS” anoints a new Mirror Ball Trophy winner.

At the end of each week, the eligible user with the highest prediction accuracy and most points will be the leaderboard champ for the week, so it’s beneficial to keep coming back often and making/updating your predictions.
Remember that coming out on top doesn’t just mean answering that week’s questions correctly. You also have to use your three big bets (500 points and two of 200 points) strategically to score the most game points. If you bet on a longshot who pulls off an upset, you can really rack up the points, so don’t take them for granted.
