There was a big surprise in Monday night’s “Dancing with the Stars”: football player Calvin Johnson got the top score from judges for the first time, besting Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez, our frontrunner to win the whole season. He got straight eights from Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, Julianne Hough and Bruno Tonioli, for a total of 32 out of 40. Hernandez scored one point lower because Inaba docked her for an unauthorized lift.
Johnson performed a Viennese waltz with his partner Lindsay Arnold in a face-off dance battle against reality TV star Terra Jole. By outscoring Jole, Johnson won immunity from elimination, so he’s safe going into Tuesday night’s results show. Hernandez also won her tango dance battle against actress Marilu Henner, so she’s safely through to the next round as well. But did Johnson really deserve the top score? And does this suddenly make him a contender to win the Mirror Ball Trophy?
As of this writing, Johnson gets 28/1 odds to win, which puts him in fourth place behind frontrunner Hernandez (1/4), Henner (16/1) and race car driver James Hinchcliffe (18/1). Vote in our poll below to let us know if the right dancer got the high score this week.
