After one week of competition in season 23 of “Dancing with the Stars,” Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez remains the early frontrunner to win the Mirror Ball trophy according to those already taking part in our predictions contest. However, now that we’ve seen the contestants perform there have been some shakeups in the overall standings. Hernandez is even farther out front than she was last week, improving from odds of 4/9 to 1/3. But she’s not the only contestant to move up in the ranks. After her first performance with six-time “DWTS”-winner Derek Hough, actress Marilu Hunner improves from 14/1 odds to 9/1 odds, strong enough to hold on to second place.
The greatest gain this week was by country singer Jana Kramer, who trailed in ninth place last week with 66/1 odds. But after a sultry Viennese waltz with pro partner Gleb Savchenko, which got some mixed reviews from the judges for being too sexy for its own good, Kramer has shot up to third place with 20/1 odds.
Race car driver James Hinchcliffe is down slightly from last week, in fourth place with 28/1 odds (from third place with 18/1 odds in week one). That’s unexpected considering that he tied Hernandez with the top judges’ score in the season premiere episode. It seems our predictions contest entrants are convinced that a woman will claim the title this year.
Rounding out the top six are football player Calvin Johnson and actor Jake T. Austin with 40/1 odds each. That’s a step down for Johnson, who was at 22/1 odds last week, but it’s a step up for Austin, who was at 66/1. Everyone else in our predictions has distant odds of 100/1, which suggests they have some work to do when it comes to making a case for themselves, with viewers as well as with our predictors.
That includes swimmer Ryan Lochte, who is way down from his week-one odds of 20/1. His foxtrot with partner Cheryl Burke landed him on the lower end of the leaderboard, but the real shock came when several audience members rushed the stage to protest his involvement with the show. Our contest entrants don’t seem to think he’ll win any sympathy from the ordeal, however.
