Week 10 of “Dancing with the Stars” season 23 was “Showstoppers Night,” but it could just as easily have been called “Girl Power Night” given how gymnast Laurie Hernandez and singer Jana Kramer ruled the dance floor. They initially performed individual dances inspired by Broadway shows — Kramer performed to “Waitress” while Hernandez channeled “Chicago” — and then joined forces for a “Team-Up Challenge” and were perfect throughout. They finished the night tied at the top of the leaderboard.
We weren’t surprised by Hernandez’s high score. It was her fourth time on top, tying race car driver James Hinchcliffe for the most weeks won, and she had leading 9/10 odds based on the picks of our predictions contest entrants. But Kramer was less expected: she was third in our predictions with 9/1 odds of being on top of the leaderboard.
The night didn’t end as well for actress Marilu Henner, who wound up at the bottom of the leaderboard and was ultimately eliminated in sixth place. Our odds correctly predicted both of those results, which is also her pro partner Derek Hough‘s worst finish ever, matching season six when he finished sixth with celeb Shannon Elizabeth. But despite that unfortunate result Henner actually went out on a high note with some of her best scores ever: straight nines for both of her routines.
Much more shocking, though, was how close Hinchcliffe came to the bottom of the leaderboard. Because of one noticeable misstep during his “The Wiz”-inspired jazz routine he missed out on a potential perfect score, and though his team-up paso doble with Calvin Johnson went more smoothly, it wasn’t enough to catch the dominant Hernandez and Kramer.
With Henner eliminated, that makes Hinchcliffe the lowest scoring dancer going into next week’s semifinals. He’s never been in that position before, so his fan base will be tested more than ever; will they vote him out of harm’s way, or will he be voted out altogether?
