“What’s interesting about Kilgrave as opposed to some of the other supervillains is that he’s not out to do anything fundamental to the world,” says David Tennant as we chat via webcam about his dark turn as Kilgrave in Netflix’s “Jessica Jones” (watch above). “He’s not trying to rule anything, or take anything over, or subdue a nation. He’s just interested in furthering his own cause so it’s particularly cruel of fate if you should land in his path.”
“Jessica Jones” is the latest extension of the Marvel universe, which includes films like “The Avengers” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” and TV shows like “Agents of SHIELD” and “Daredevil.” True to that comic book world, the title character played by Krysten Ritter has greatly enhanced strength, while Kilgrave has the ability to control minds.
However, “the whole world of ‘Jessica Jones,’ although there are people with super powers and people who can do extraordinary things, they live very much in the same world as us,” explains the actor about the show’s gritty and grounded psychological tone. “There’s something more sinister about the world of ‘Jessica Jones’ because it feels like the world that we live in. These are real human beings.”
Kilgrave was killed off at the end of the first season, which isn’t always the end for characters in the Marvel universe. However, Tennant can neither confirm nor deny whether he’ll return to the show. There also isn’t too much he can reveal about his crime drama “Broadchurch,” which is in production for its third season. He does say that the upcoming storyline deals with “a different type of case, and it involves lots of people we haven’t met so far. It takes place a few years after season two and then something happens in Broadchurch that sets everyone into a tailspin in a way that has never been visited upon that town before — I’ve already said too much!”
