“Days of Our Lives” has dominated the Daytime Emmy race for Best Younger Actor for the last four years, with Chandler Massey prevailing three times (2012-2014) and Freddie Smith following him with a win in 2015. But both of those actors are out of the running now (Massey left the show in 2014, and Smith aged out of this category before leaving in 2015), so can one of their recent challengers capitalize on their absence? Max Ehrich (“The Young and the Restless“) has been nominated for the last three years, and Bryan Craig (“General Hospital“) has been nominated for the last two. Both are waiting for their first turn in the winner’s circle.
Ehrich is the only pre-nominee in this category for “Y&R,” which is surprising since “Y&R” has more pre-nominations overall than any other soap (23). But Craig is joined by two other “GH” actors on the ballot. Tequan Richmond joined the cast as TJ Ashford in 2012 and was nominated for the first time last year. And Nicolas Bechtel assumed the role of Spencer Cassadine in 2013; he has yet to be nominated.
“Days of Our Lives” has the most pre-nominations in this category with five actors cited, but none of them have yet been nominated for an Emmy. Casey Moss has played JJ Deveraux since 2013, while James Lastovic assumed the role of Joey Johnson just last year. Twelve-year-old Terrell Ransom Jr. played Theo Carver from 2008 to 2015, until the character was aged and recast.
The last two “Days” contenders are pre-nominated for the same role. Connor Kalopsis played Chase Jennings from 2014 to 2015. #Jonathan McClendon# assumed the role when the character was aged last year.
Rounding out the category are two actors from “The Bold and the Beautiful,” both of whom are aiming for their first nomination. Pierson Fode took over the role of Thomas Forrester in 2015; that role was previously played by Drew Tyler Bell, who won this category in 2010. Rome Flynn also joined “B&B” in 2015, playing Zende Forrester.
Those who made the cut advanced to the blue ribbon screening round, which began February 22. That round of voting will determine the final nominees in each category, and also the winners. All nominations will be announced on Thursday, March 24 with the winners unveiled on Sunday, May 1.
