Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won four Best Comedy Actress Emmys in a row for her role as Selina Meyer on HBO’s “Veep,” and now she’s expected to take home her fifth according to the predictions of our Emmy Awards experts — journalists from major media outlets like TV Guide, Variety and Yahoo. That would bring her career total to a whopping eight trophies after winning for acting on “Seinfeld” (supporting, 1996) and “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (lead, 2006), and producing “Veep” when it won Best Comedy Series (2015).
Last year’s Best Comedy Actress nominees were: Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie”), Lisa Kudrow (“The Comeback”), Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”), Amy Schumer (“Inside Amy Schumer”), Lily Tomlin (“Grace and Frankie”) and Louis-Dreyfus. Only three of these six are eligible again, as Falco, Kudrow and Poehler have all moved on to other projects.
Fourteen of our 15 Emmy experts are predicting Louis-Dreyfus to earn a nomination, while 13 think she’ll prevail. The lone holdouts are Don Kaplan (New York Daily News) who has Louis-Dreyfus in second place behind Schumer, and Kerr Lordygan (Rotten Tomatoes) who predicts she’ll be snubbed completely.
This overwhelming support for Louis-Dreyfus translates to leading 10/3 racetrack odds to win Best Comedy Actress. Following her on our experts’ chart are Schumer in second place with 9/2 odds, Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) in third place with 9/2 odds and Rachel Bloom (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) in fourth place with 7/1 odds.
