Among many of the first-time champs were Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”), Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”), “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and a trio of stars from “The People v. O.J. Simpson”: Sarah Paulson, Courtney B. Vance and Sterling K. Brown.
However, for every new winner there was a repeat recipient waiting in the wings. Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”) and Regina King (“American Crime”) earned their second straight trophies while Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) made history by winning her fifth in a row.
As for the series races, “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” enjoyed back-to-back victories while sketch series “Key & Peele” shocked by winning its first Emmy for its farewell season. “The People v. O.J. Simpson” won Best Limited Series as expected, but “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” surprised by taking home the prize for Best TV Movie.
