“We saw a lot of each other. It’s good to be with someone who’s courageous like that,” says Finn Wittrock as we chat via webcam (watch above) about his intimate sex scenes with Lady Gaga on FX’s “American Horror Story: Hotel.” Wittrock played two different characters on the latest installment — male model Tristan Duffy and Hollywood star Rudolph Valentino — a first for the “AHS” franchise.
Wittrock shared many of his “Hotel” scenes with Denis O’Hare, whom he was nominated against at the Emmy Awards last year as Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor for “Freak Show.” They both lost to Bill Murray (“Olive Kitteridge”). Asked about working with O’Hare this season, Wittrock notes, “It was great they really gave him such a juicy role.”
Since the franchise debuted in 2011, it has earned 18 acting Emmy nominations and nabbed four wins: Jessica Lange in 2012 and 2014, James Cromwell in 2013 and Kathy Bates in 2014. Of the cast members he’d like to see win next, Wittrock says, “I hate to jinx somebody but I feel that this is Sarah Paulson’s year. Knowing that day by day she was playing Sally (‘AHS: Hotel’) to Marcia (‘The People v. OJ Simpson’), she gets my vote.”
Turning the conversation to his work in the Oscar-nominated “The Big Short” and the film’s Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Ensemble, he explains, “That was a huge honor. It was the coolest one. It was just cool to sit at the table like you’re a peer.” Also in our chat, Wittrock takes fan questions from Twitter and teases what he knows about the upcoming sixth season of “American Horror Story.”
