“It’s impossible to encapsulate the life of a poet,” admits Gael Garcia Bernal during our recent interview (watch above) when talking about his new film “Neruda.” He adds that it is especially true for “a poet that lived many lives within one life.” Bernal stars in this Orchard release as an inspector hunting down the Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco), who becomes a fugitive in his home country after joining the Communist Party in the late 1940s. The film is Chile’s official selection for the Foreign Language Film Oscar, and reaped a Golden Globe nomination on Monday.
The actor had high praise for director Pablo Larrain, with whom he also worked with on the Academy Award-nominated “No” (2012). Instead of making a straight-forward biopic, Larrain chose to tell his story through the eyes of the bumbling inspector. “There’s always something fantastic about the point-of-view, the angle that he takes,” he explains of the filmmaker’s approach. “It’s a dangerous point-of-view as well, because it raises up difficult questions.” The movie “Neruda” opens in Los Angeles on Dec. 16th before beginning its national expansion on Jan. 6th.
Bernal won the Golden Globe for Best TV Comedy Actor for Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle” last year, and received his second nomination for the role on Monday. “It gave me a lot of happiness,” he recalls of the win. “It’s not like my life was different the next day, but it gave me pure joy.” With “Neruda” also recognized as one of the five nominees for Best Foreign Language Film, the next awards ceremony on January 8th could be a good night for Bernal.
