Four of this year’s five Golden Globe nominees for Best Comedy/Musical Actor are past Globe champs. That includes Matt Damon (“The Martian“), who won Best Screenplay with Ben Affleck for “Good Will Hunting” (1997). However, he has yet to win as an actor despite five previous bids. That will change this year according to our Experts.
Out of the 16 expert journalists we’ve polled from outlets including IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes and Yahoo, 12 are forecasting a victory for Damon, giving him 4/9 odds: Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), Taiq Khan (Fox News), Jack Mathews (Gold Derby), Michael Musto (Out.com), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Kevin Polowy (Yahoo), Christopher Rosen (Entertainment Weekly), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Glenn Whipp (LA Times) and Susan Wloszczyna (RogerEbert.com).
But all four of Damon’s Globe rivals have support from one of our experts. Keith Simanton (IMDB) says 2010 Supporting Actor winner Christian Bale (“The FIghter”) will prevail for “The Big Short,” giving him 11/1 odds. Sasha Stone (Awards Daily) thinks Bale’s co-star Steve Carell (a 2006 Globe winner for “The Office”) will be victorious, giving him 12/1 odds.
Also with 12/1 odds is four-time Golden Globe winner Al Pacino for his performance in “Danny Collins“, whom Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior) is forecasting will win. Lastly, Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) is betting on an upset victory for Mark Ruffalo (“Infinitely Polar Bear“), who is the only nominee without a previous win.
Our Editors, the in-house staff who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby, aren’t divided at all. All six of us are predicting Damon to prevail.
Also backing Damon are 22 of our Top 24 Users, who had the highest scores predicting last year’s Globe winners. The other two top users agree with Simanton that Bale will surprise.
In addition, more than 1,000 total Users are contributing their predictions for this event, and the vast majority of them say Damon is the man to beat.
Are we right? Will Damon win his first acting honors from the Globes after five previous attempts?
