Which audio book should Jessica Lange record? According to your votes in our ongoing poll below, she is by far the likeliest of the 12 artists with at least one Emmy, Oscar and Tony to complete her EGOT by taking home a Grammy.
Lange won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1982 for”Tootsie” and then followed up with a Best Actress win for “Blue Sky” in 1994. Her three Emmys came for movie/miniseries roles: “Grey Gardens” (2009), “American Horror Story” (2012), and “American Horror Story: Coven” (2014). And she just claimed the Tony Award as Best Actress in a Play for her riveting performance in “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.”
In our poll, which is still open below, Lange is followed by Helen Mirren, Liza Minnelli (who has an honorary Grammy legend award but has never won in competition), and then Maggie Smith. The rest of the list consists of Ellen Burstyn, Jeremy Irons, Frances McDormand, Al Pacino, Christopher Plummer, Vanessa Redgrave, Geoffrey Rush, and Tony Walton.
In addition to the dozen names listed in our poll, 12 performers who have passed away won at least one Emmy, Oscar and Tony (but alas no Grammy): Jack Albertson, Anne Bancroft, Ingrid Bergman, Shirley Booth, Ralph Burns, Melvyn Douglas, Bob Fosse, Thomas Mitchell, Jason Robards, Paul Scofield, Maureen Stapleton, and Jessica Tandy.
The dozen people to earn the EGOT (in chronological order of achievement) are: Richard Rodgers, Helen Hayes, Rita Moreno, John Gielgud, Audrey Hepburn, Marvin Hamlisch, Jonathan Tunick, Mel Brooks, Mike Nichols, Whoopi Goldberg, Scott Rudin, and Robert Lopez. (You don’t find Harry Belafonte, James Earl Jones or Barbra Streisand on this list because at least one of their awards was honorary.)
