The long wait is over. The academy finally announced Monday that ABC’s late-night golden boy (and reigning Emmy Awards emcee) Jimmy Kimmel will host the 2017 Oscars. Read our report on the big announcement right here, and then be sure to cast your vote below for how you think Kimmel will do hosting the Oscars.
Kimmel is no stranger to being in the limelight, having hosted the Emmys twice — 2012 and 2016, both when ABC housed the ceremony — as well as his own nightly talk show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” But how will he do when compared to recent Oscar ringleaders Chris Rock (2016), Neil Patrick Harris (2015) and Ellen DeGeneres (2014)?
This year’s 89th Academy Awards producers Jennifer Todd and Mike De Luca were no doubt looking for a safe choice with hosting experience, but did they make a mistake in not going with someone with a film pedigree? Kimmel has worked in television for much of his adult life, from “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to “The Man Show” to “Win Ben Stein’s Money.” Ironically, the last movie he popped up in was “Ted 2” (2015), written and voice-acted by Seth MacFarlane, who just happened to host the Oscars back in 2013.
