“I was waiting on line for the bathroom, and this pregnant lady keeps looking at me,” reveals actress Kether Donohue when asked during our recent webcam chat (watch above) about being recognized from her role as Lindsay Jillian on the FXX hit comedy series “You’re the Worst.” As she continues the story, the woman then hugged her saying she loved the show and especially Lindsay who made her feel better that she was “married and pregnant, but I still have this inner slut inside of me.”
Lindsay is best friend to lead character Gretchen Cutler (Aya Cash) who thinks she sold out when she married Paul (Allan McLeod), a boring banker. After splitting with him, Lindsay often struggles to make good choices. Those are commented upon by the other main character on the show, Gretchen’s boyfriend Jimmy Shive-Overly (Chris Geere), a caustic British writer.
Donohue earned a Critics’ Choice Awards nomination this year as Best Comedy Supporting Actress; she lost to Mayim Bialik (“The Big Bang Theory”). She readily admits that such recognition was never “in my realm of consciousness or thinking that it would ever happen.” Indeed, it was so far from her mind that she ignored the call from her manager telling her she’d been nominated. It wasn’t until several missed and dropped calls later that she finally found out why her manager was trying to reach her at 7:30 in the morning.
Donohue also featured in Fox’s recent production of “Grease: Live” playing Jan, one of the Pink Ladies. Recalling that chaotic experience she admits, “There is no time to think or judge what you’re doing.” And that reminded her of what she loves about doing theater — always having to be present for the role.
