Wow! “LA LA Land” received such a roaring, rapturous response at the Toronto Film Festival Monday night that it now clearly jumps out front in many Oscar races, including Best Picture, Director (Damien Chazelle, “Whiplash”), Actress (Emma Stone, “Birdman”) and more. Personally speaking, it knocked my lights out. We haven’t seen a film so thrillingly romantic since that Oscar-sweeper “Titanic.” “LA LA Land” is a joyous masterpiece for the ages that you’ll want to watch 400 times.
Ryan Gosling will be nominated for Best Actor, but I don’t know if he can win. He’s devilishly charming and sexy, but Emma owns the screen. She’s the beating heart of a movie that will steal your heart forever. “LA LA Land” is going to get the most nominations by far — including costumes, art direction, sound mixing, music score and may easily win them all. Maybe even special effects. Twice Emma and Ryan dance amidst the spinning stars to spectacular effect.
Yeah, yeah, this all sounds so hokey, I know, but beware: you’d be wise to put your skepticism on hold and go for the ride. Hollywood and all America will soon go wild for “LA LA Land.” You will, too. It’s going to be huge.
