Lionsgate has released a new trailer for the romantic musical “La La Land,” which will be released on December 16 and could be a major player at the Oscars. The new trailer features the song “Audition,” sung by lead actress Emma Stone. Watch it above.
“La La Land” follows an aspiring actress (Stone) struggling to get by with a jazz musician (Ryan Gosling) in the City of Angels. It’s directed by Damien Chazelle, the 31-year-old director whose 2014 breakthrough film, “Whiplash,” won three Oscars and earned him a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay (he lost to Graham Moore for “The Imitation Game”).
“Whiplash” was a Best Picture-nominee driven by music, but the last bona fide musical to earn a nomination in the Oscars’ top race was “Les Miserables” in 2012. Before that you’d have to go back another 10 years to find a musical Best Picture nominee (not counting musician biopics like “Ray”): “Chicago,” which won the top prize in 2002. Before that “Moulin Rouge” revived the musical genre with its Best Picture nomination in 2001.
Both of Chazelle’s leading stars are also past Oscar contenders. Stone was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2014 for “Birdman,” while Gosling was up for Best Actor in 2006 for “Half Nelson.” It’s surprising that Gosling has only contended once at the Oscars considering he has starred in a number of other films that have been on the awards radar since then, like “Lars and the Real Girl” (2007), “Blue Valentine” (2010), “Drive” (2011), “The Ides of March” (2011) and “The Big Short” (2015).
