With all the attention that has gone to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in recent weeks thanks to an emerging sexual assault scandal involving accusations from numerous women, the 2016 third party candidates for president have probably been feeling left out. But as always “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” leaves no satirical stone unturned. On Sunday, October 16, he gave Green Party candidate Jill Stein and Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson the attention they’ve wanted — though maybe not the attention they were hoping for. Watch above.
“Just dismissing third party candidates as spoilers shuts down debate. And while the argument that the only thing that stops Trump is a vote for Hillary Clinton is a powerful one, so is the argument that people should vote for the candidate who most closely shares their values,” John Oliver says. However, he adds that “the more you look at Gary Johnson and Jill Stein, the more you realize the lack of coverage they complain about so much might have genuinely benefited them because their key proposals begin to crumble under the slightest scrutiny … When people say you don’t have to choose the lesser of two evils, they are right because you have to choose the lesser of four.”
Oliver has focused more on the 2016 presidential campaign in the last few weeks than he did in the entire last year. He often focuses on less talked about subjects to put them on the public radar (like infrastructure, retirement plans, and 911 calls), and that approach won him Emmys for Best Variety Talk Series and Best Variety Series Writing. Considering more than a decade of Emmy success for political satires “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report,” these more timely political segments may already give him the advantage to win again in 2017.
