Makeup & Hairstyling Guild Awards: Oscar frontrunner ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ wins twice

As predicted, the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” led the guild awards on Saturday, winning Special Makeup Effects as well as the makeup prize for Period/Character films.

The guild completely snubbed the two other Oscar contenders for Best Makeup & Hairstyling: “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared” and “The Revenant.”

The only guild prize “Mad Max” lost was the Period/Character Hairstyling award, which went to “Cinderella.” Meanwhile, “Pitch Perfect 2” took Contemporary Hairstyling while “Furious 7” claimed Contemporary Makeup.

Last year, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” won the awards for both period/character hairstyling and makeup before winning at the Oscars.  One of its two rivals at the Oscars — “Guardians of the Galaxy‘ — won both contemporary and special makeup (the other Oscar nominee, “Foxcatcher” contended in that latter category). However, “Guardians” lost the contemporary hairstyling race to “Birdman.”

And in 2013, “Dallas Buyers Club” won the Period/Character Makeup prize here before prevailing at the Oscars. One of its rival Oscar nominees, “Bad Grandpa,” claimed the Special Makeup Effects prize while the third Oscar contender, “The Lone Ranger,” was shut out.

The Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild also honored the best in TV, giving two prizes to “Dancing With the Stars” (Contemporary Hair and Contemporary Makeup) and two to “Game of Thrones” (Period/Character Hair and Period/Character Makeup), but “American Horror Story: Hotel” dominated with five wins: Period/Character Hair, Period/Character Makeup and Special Makeup Effects for Movie/Minis, plus two commercial prizes for its promos.

These awards werehanded out on Feb. 20 at Paramount Studios. Make-up artist Ve Neill and hair stylist Yolanda Toussieng, both Oscar and Emmy winners, were feted for their lifetime achievements.
