Roadside Attractions has premiered a new trailer for “Manchester by the Sea,” about a Boston janitor (Casey Affleck) who suddenly has to care for his teenage nephew (Lucas Hedges). Roadside and Amazon Studios are releasing the film on November 18. Does it look like an Oscar-winner to you? Watch it above.
“Manchester” is written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan, who made an awards splash with his directorial debut, “You Can Count on Me,” in 2000. That film earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and was a breakthrough film for its stars Laura Linney (a nominee for Best Actress) and Mark Ruffalo.
After that film Lonergan earned a second Oscar nomination for co-writing Martin Scorsese‘s period epic “Gangs of New York” (2002), but then there was a long wait until Lonergan’s next project as a director, “Margaret,” was finally released in 2011. That film was plagued by delays and lawsuits but was vindicated by critics who widely praised it, even listing it among the best of the 21st century.
Perhaps “Manchester” will now give Lonergan his Oscar comeback. Lead actor Affleck is a past Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford” (2007). And his co-star Michelle Williams is a three-time Oscar-nominee: for her supporting role in “Brokeback Mountain” (2005) and her lead roles in “Blue Valentine” (2010) and “My Week with Marilyn” (2011). It doesn’t hurt that Williams is just coming off her first Tony nomination: Best Actress in a Play for “Blackbird.”
