It’s been a good week for country newcomer Maren Morris. She performed her song “80s Mercedes” on “Ellen DeGeneres Show” on October 19 (watch above). Morris also announced that she’ll start touring solo in 2017 in support of her breakthrough album “Hero,” starting in Boston on February 3; she’s currently on the road with Keith Urban‘s “RipCORD Tour.” Oh, and it looks like she’s going to have a pretty good night at the Country Music Association Awards in November.
Morris isn’t yet a household name in country music, but that may be about to change. The 26-year-old singer-songwriter released her major label debut album “Hero” on June 3, but she’s already a favorite among industry insiders. She picked up five CMA nominations: Album of the Year (“Hero”), New Artist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Single and Song of the Year (both for “My Church”).
As of this writing she’s only tipped to win the New Artist award according to our predictions (she gets leading 8/15 odds), but she’s also a close second for Female Vocalist, getting 5/2 odds of upsetting frontrunner Carrie Underwood. It’s also possible Morris could be this year’s Chris Stapleton, who was relatively unknown last year when he pulled off a surprise sweep at the CMAs, taking New Artist as well as Album of the Year (“Traveller”) and Male Vocalist of the Year. Stapleton followed that windfall with two Grammys and four Academy of Country Music Awards.
