“Doctor Strange,” which opened Friday, is the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that kicked off with the 2008 release “Iron Man.” To date, the first 13 titles have taken in a jaw-dropping $10.2 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing film franchise of all-time.
While they have collected eight Oscar nominations between them, none of these films has broken through with bids in any of the major categories. Could “Doctor Strange,” which stars Emmy winner Benedict Cumberbatch (“Sherlock”) in the title role, be the first to contend in the above-the-line races.
Certainly it has done well with reviewers, with many of them singling out the performances of Cumberbatch and Oscar winner Tilda Swinton (“Michael Clayton”) as the Ancient One who guides the not-so-good doctor on a path towards redemption. Indeed, the overall critical consensus is strong enough that “Doctor Strange” merits a score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes,
