“There hasn’t been anything like this in the past,” says President Barack Obama about the economic crisis caused by a massive hack of American financial systems — fictionally, of course. The new trailer for season 2 of USA Network’s “Mr. Robot” — which premieres on Wednesday, July 13 — details the aftermath of the hack by Elliot Anderson (Rami Malek) and his fellow cyber-activists in season one of USA’s critically acclaimed psychological thriller (watch it above).
“Mr. Robot” premiered in the summer of 2015 and gradually crept its way into the cultural consciousness, earning critical acclaim and tapping into modern anxiety about technology, big business and financial corruption. By the end of its 10-episode first season it was one of TV’s most acclaimed shows, and it won Best Drama Series prizes at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice TV Awards.
Breakout star Malek was also an award-winner, taking Best Drama Actor at Critics’ Choice as well as nominations from the Globes and SAG Awards, and the show won Best New Series at the Writers Guild Awards. The first season aired almost a year ago and might normally be at risk of being forgotten by the time the Emmys make their choices this summer, but promoting its new season means television academy voters will get plenty of reminders of the show and its acclaim while marking their ballots.
