Experts’ Oscar predictions: ‘Spotlight’ moves ahead of ‘The Revenant’ for Best Picture, ‘The Big Short’ third

"Spotlight" has regained first place in the race for Best Picture over "The Revenant" according to our Oscar experts. Fifteen journalists from leading publications like Entertainment Weekly and Huffington Post have weighed in with their predictions. Seven of them are now backing five-time Oscar nominee "Spotlight," which was named Best Picture at the Critics' Choice Awards on Sunday. That support gives it odds of 27/20 to prevail on Oscar Sunday (February 28). 

Six are still supporting "The Revenant," which won three Golden Globes and has a leading 12 Oscar nomiations. Those votes translate into odds of 17/10. Our other two experts are predicting"The Big Short," a late entry into the race that racked up five Oscar nominations and now has odds of 13/2 to win.

Ten-time Oscar nominee "Mad Max: Fury Road" dominated the Critics' Choice Awards, winning nine awards. It now has odds of 66/1 to take the top prize at the Oscars. And its helmer, George Miller, has just moved into first place over Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu ("The Revenant") for Best Director. 

"The Martian, which contends in seven Oscar categories but not Best Director, also has odds of 66/1. "Room" (4 nominations) is at 80/1 while "Bridge of Spies" (6 nominations) and "Brooklyn" (3 nominations) sit at 100/1.

Kevin Polowy (Yahoo) joins the half dozen experts already backing "Spotlight" for the win: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Jack Mathews (Gold Derby), Christopher Rosen (Entertainment Weekly) and Brian Truitt (USA Today). 

The six pundits picking "The Revenant" to prevail are: Edward Douglas (Comingsoon), Michael Musto (Out.com), Tom O'Neil (Gold Derby), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood/ Indiewire), Susan Wloszczyna (RogerEbert.com) and me.

And the two touting "The Big Short" for Best Picture are Tim Gray (Variety) and Sasha Stone (Awards Daily).

Our Experts are predicting that "The Revenant" will win two other Oscars: Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Cinematography. 

"Mad Max: Fury Road" is expected to take home seven Oscars: Director (George Miller), Film Editing, Makeup & Hairstyling, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects. 

"Spotlight" will claim one other award: Original Screenplay. 

"The Big Short" will win one: Adapted Screenplay. 

"Room" is  predicted to win Actress for Brie Larson while "Creed" will land Supporting Actor (Sylvester Stallone) and "Carol" will net Supporting Actress (Rooney Mara). 

"Cinderella" is forecast for Costume Design, "The Hateful Eight" is ahead for Score and "The Hunting Ground" is tipped for Song.
