“The Revenant,” which leads with 12 Oscar nominations, is out front to win Best Picture according to our Oscar experts. Eleven journalists from leading publications like Entertainment Weekly and Huffington Post have weighed in with their predictions. Six of them now back this three-time Golden Globes champ. That strong support gives it leading odds of 1/1 to take the top prize on February 28. This epic Western had been in second prior to the announcement of the nominations where it overperformed, reaping unexpected bids for Tom Hardy (Supporting Actor) as well as costume and production design.
Three experts still favor “Spotlight,” the overwhelming frontrunner heading into the nominations, which has six nods in all; those votes translate into odds of 14/5. And two tout “The Big Short,” a late entry into the race that racked up five nominations and now has odds of 9/2 to win Best Picture (up one postition to third place).
“The Martian, which contends in seven categories but not Best Director, is down one place to fourth and has odds of 66/1. But be mindful as we had eventual Oscar champ “Birdman” back in fourth at the same time last year, with “Boyhood,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “The Imitation Game” ahead of this eventual Best Picture champ.
Also at 66/1 is “Mad Max: Fury Road” (10 nominations) while “Room” (4 nominations) and “Bridge of Spies” (6 nominations) are at 80/1 and “Brooklyn” (3 nominations) is at 100/1.
The six pundits picking “The Revenant” to prevail are: Edward Douglas (Comingsoon), Michael Musto (Out.com), Christopher Rosen (Entertainment Weekly), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood/ Indiewire) and me.
