“I’m clearer on who’s going to win Best Director at the Oscars — George Miller, ‘Mad Max’ — than I am at who will win at DGA” this Saturday, says Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood/ Indiewire) in our video chat (watch above or here). “I’m assuming it will be both because it usually is both, not always, but usually.”
See all of Anne’s current predictions here. See how they stack up against the picks of our other experts for Oscars and Directors Guild of America.
Anne believes Miller will prevail because of “the wide range of guild awards that have gone for ‘Mad Max.’ This is the big scale movie like ‘Life of Pi’ or ‘Gravity’ where that filmmaker who made that world come to life is going to be rewarded.”
Anne notes that the contest for Best Picture at the Oscars is “a close race between four films” – “Mad Max,” “The Revenant,” “Big Short” and “Spotlight” – but adds: “I go with the ‘Spotlight’ idea because it’s the most serious. It has the most gravitas. It’s the most important. We know it’s going to win Best Screenplay.”
