"The Big Short" surprised most of us Oscar pundits by winning Best Picture at the PGA Awards last Saturday night, defeating presumed frontrunners "Spotlight" and "The Revenant." Now the Wall Street satire has moved into the lead for the top Oscar according to our Top 24 Users. That's significant because our Top 24 beat thousands of others to get the highest scores predicting last year's Oscar winners. Will they be right again?
Out of our two dozen elite users, 10 of them are predicting "The Big Short," giving it leading 13/8 odds: pcarron, thedemonhog (aka Gold Derby contributor Riley Chow), Lars-Birger, Mr. Marc, dougj22, Engapantio, Phillip Milner, Not Tony, kevinps37 and Louis.
Our last top user, jeremy, is going out on a limb for the emotional mother-son drama "Room," giving it 20/1 odds. But remember that jeremy got the highest score predicting last year's Oscar winners, correctly forecasting all but one award (96% accuracy). Is he onto something again this year?
Gold Derby's Editors, we who cover awards year-round for the site, have also switched our support to "The Big Short." Five of us – Chris Beachum, Marcus Dixon, Tom O'Neil, Paul Sheehan and I – now think it'll take the top prize, while Rob Licuria and Matt Noble say it'll be "The Revenant."
