Oscars 2017 calendar updated: SAG Awards voting begins Nov. 17

More than three weeks before Oscar nomination ballots go online on Jan. 5, the Screen Actors Guild will have weighed in with its nominations. But these awards, which not surprisingly are a strong bellwether as to who will win the four Oscars for acting, won’t be handed out till five days after Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 24. However, the slate of nominees for the 23rd annual edition of these kudos will be unveiled on Dec. 14.

By that point in the calendar, the major critics groups will have weighed in with their winners as will the National Board of Review and the AFI. And the Golden Globes reveal their nominees on Dec. 12, two days before SAG does so. However, the rest of the guilds won’t reveal their nominations until much closer to the time of academy voting. Indeed, the editors, writers and art directors roll out their rosters in the three days before Oscar voting commences while the directors, producers, makeup artists & hairstylists and visual effects wizard do so during the nine days of balloting that ends on Jan. 13. The announcement of the nominations for the 89th annual Academy Awards will be on Jan. 24, 2017.
