With over 71,000 people voting in our latest Oscars poll, you have made it loud and clear as to which two men are the top choices to host the next ceremony. Actor Robert Downey, Jr. received the most support with 55.54% of the votes, followed by comedian Ricky Gervais with 37.66%. The other 13 people in the poll weren’t even close.
This survey was strictly about possible first-time hosts for the 2017 Academy Awards ceremony next February. As two of the past three Oscar emcees — Ellen DeGeneres and Chris Rock — had previously hosted, we wanted to know if it’s time for some new blood.
Downey is a two-time Oscar nominee (“Chaplin,” 1992; “Tropic Thunder,” 2008) who has spent the past decade headlining such blockbuster franchises as “Iron Man,” “The Avengers,” and “Sherlock Holmes.” Gervais is a four-time host of the Golden Globes and two time Emmy winner (“The Office,” 2006; “Extras,” 2007).
We included several other comedians in our poll: Louis C.K., Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Kevin Hart, the team of Key and Peele, Jimmy Kimmel, and Amy Schumer. Actors and actresses were Tom Hanks, Queen Latifah, Melissa McCarthy, Kevin Spacey, Justin Timberlake, and Oprah Winfrey.
Even though the rookie hosting poll is now closed, you can continue voting in our other current Oscars poll: who would be the best returning host?
