This year’s Best Actress Oscar race is starting to look like a cast reunion of the 2011 film “The Help” thanks to high-profile performances on the horizon by Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Jessica Chastain. Stone won Best Actress at Venice for her singing and dancing in “La La Land,” which just won the Audience Award at the Toronto film festival. Davis’s film “Fences” has yet to screen so the early buzz is based on the trailer and the fact that she is reprising the Broadway performance that won her a Tony. And Chastain stars in “Miss Sloane,” a timely film about the issue of gun control in which she plays a ruthless Washington lobbyist.
This would mark Stone’s first bid in the Best Actress category after previously being nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 2014’s Best Picture winner “Birdman.” Davis is looking for Oscar nomination #3 after prior recognition for “The Help” (lead) and “Doubt” (supporting in 2008). And Chastain, whose performance is being compared to Faye Dunaway in “Network,” was also recognized for her supporting role in “The Help” and reaped a leading nom for “Zero Dark Thirty” (2012).
