On Wednesday (Dec. 21), the academy announced the seven films that made the shortlist for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. From this septet, the final three nominees in the category will be determined:
Members of the academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will convene on Jan. 7 to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven films and vote for the final nominees, which will be announced with all other categories on Jan. 23.
Of the various genres represented in the race, there are three period pictures (“The Dressmaker,” “Florence Foster Jenkins” and “Hail, Caesar!”), two comic books come to life (“Deadpool,” “Suicide Squad”), a sci-fi flick (“Star Trek: Beyond”) and the Swedish entry for Foreign Language Film (A Man Called Ove”).
Last year’s winner was the post-apocalyptic picture “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which prevailed over the Swedish film “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared” and “The Revenant.”
