‘Penny Dreadful’ season 3 trailer: Horror series returns May 1 on Showtime

Showtime has premiered a new trailer for its cult hit horror series “Penny Dreadful,” which returns for its third season on May 1 (watch it above). The series brings together characters from 19th century fantasy and horror stories, including Dorian Grey and Victor Frankenstein. It stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton, who fight supernatural forces in Victorian-era England.

The first season competed at the Emmys in 2015, earning three nominations: Best Prosthetic Makeup, Best Main Title Theme Music, and Best Music Composition. But it has done even better at other events.

Green earned a Critics’ Choice bid for Best Drama Actress last May for the first season, and then the second season earned a nom for Best Drama Series when Critics’ Choice moved their awards to January. Green also picked up a Golden Globe bid in January for Best TV Drama Actress. So can the show continue to pick up momentum at the Emmys?

Season two is under consideration by Emmy voters this year, while season three won’t be eligibile until 2017, but it will be airing while TV academy members fill out their ballots to decide the nominees (June 13-27), which will keep the series fresh in mind. That’s often a major awards advantage for shows that air during the spring and summer.

Season three adds new actors to the cast. Critics’ Choice-nominated guest star Patti LuPone signs on as a season regular in a new role as Green’s unorthodox therapist. Wes Studi appears as a Kaetenay, who has a connection to Hartnett. And Shazad Latif plays the infamous Dr. Henry Jekyll.
