The Tony Awards were held at the Beacon Theater on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on Sunday, June 12, but the press gathered around the corner at the Jewish Community Center on Amsterdam Avenue to greet the winners after they accepted their trophies. The 70th annual edition of Broadway’s biggest kudos were handed out during a live telecast hosted by James Corden, the host of CBS’s “Late Late Show” and a past Tony-winner himself for his performance in the play “One Man, Two Guvnors” (2012). Awards were handed out in 24 categories, from Best Musical and Best Play to Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design.
Live performances during the kudosfest included the five Best Musical nominees (“Bright Star,” “Hamilton,” “School of Rock,” “Shuffle Along” and “Waitress”), the four Best Musical Revival contenders (“The Color Purple,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “She Loves Me” and “Spring Awakening) and “On Your Feet,” which tells the story of Gloria Estefan and was nominated for Best Choreography.
Presenters included a trio of Oscar winners (Cate Blanchett, Common and Barbra Streisand), a slew of past Tony champs — Christian Borle, Neil Patrick Harris, Nikki M. James, James Earl Jones, Nathan Lane, Angela Lansbury, Audra McDonald, Patina Miller, Bebe Neuwirth, Chita Rivera and Andrew Lloyd Webber — and Emmy winners Uzo Aduba, Claire Danes, Sean Hayes, and Oprah Winfrey.
