In Hollywood, one film can make all the difference. Sylvester Stallone started his career with Oscar nominations for writing and acting in “Rocky” in 1976. Then his career took a downturn, resulting in decades of Razzie Awards infamy. But this year he reprised his role as Rocky Balboa in “Creed,” resulting in acclaim from critics, a likely Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and the Redeemer Award at the Razzies.
The Razzies established the Redeemer Award last year to honor actors and filmmakers who have turned their careers around from Razzie-winning dreck to high-quality success. Last year the award went to Ben Affleck, who graduated from Razzie’s Worst Picture “Gigli” to Oscar’s Best Picture “Argo.”
But it’s hard to imagine a bigger turnaround than Stallone’s. He won Worst Actor four times, more than anyone else in Razzie history. He was also named Worst Actor of the 1980s and the Worst Actor of the 20th Century. He was last nominated for Worst Actor just two years ago, but now he’s an Oscar frontrunner, and our combined Razzie predictions declare him a near lock for the Redeemer Award.
We’ve polled Expert film journalists, Editors who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby, the Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Razzie winners and hundreds of total Users who make up our largest and often savviest bloc of predictors.
All six experts predicting the Razzies say Stallone will win this redemptive honor, giving him 1/20 odds: Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby) and Adnan Virk (ESPN).
Our editors are also unanimous. All six of us are betting on Stallone: Chris Beachum, Marcus Dixon, Rob Licuria, O’Neil, Sheehan and myself.
Stallone is also way out front according to our Top 24 Users, though it’s not quite unanimous. Twenty are predicting Stallone, but one says it will be Elizabeth Banks, who won Worst Director for “Movie 43” but then helmed the musical comedy hit “Pitch Perfect 2.” One other top user says the award will go to Will Smith, who won Razzie for the sci-fi dud “After Earth” but earned Oscar buzz and a Golden Globe nomination this year for “Concussion.”
None of our experts, editors or top users are predicting the last nominee, director M. Night Shyamalan, who turned around a string of panned films to direct the horror sleeper hit “The Visit.”
