“The power we are dealing with here is immeasurable,” says Ben Mendelsohn as sinister Imperial director Orson Krennic in the new second trailer for “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which was released on Thursday, October 13 (watch above). He’s not kidding. Disney acquired the rights to the “Star Wars” franchise in 2012 and released “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015 to critical acclaim and a staggering $2 billion at the worldwide box office. That’s a tough act to follow.
The new films is set in-between the events of “Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” and “Episode IV: A New Hope” and tells the story of the Rebel mission to steal the plans for the Galactic Empire’s Death Star. Oscar-nominee Felicity Jones (“The Theory of Everything”) leads the team of rebels, and the new trailer also reveals Mads Mikkelsen, TV’s erstwhile Hannibal Lecter, as her mysterious father. Joining them are a multicultural ensemble cast that includes Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.
J.J. Abrams directed “The Force Awakens,” but the reins of this stand-alone film have been handed to Gareth Edwards, who previously helmed the sci-fi indie thriller “Monsters” (2010) and the big-budget remake of “Godzilla” (2014). This is only his third feature film as a director, but he’s working from a screenplay by two Oscar-nominated writers: Chris Weitz (“About a Boy”) and Tony Gilroy (“Michael Clayton”).
