TV guild awards calendar 2017: Deadlines and dates for SAG, PGA, DGA, WGA …

On Dec. 14, the Screen Actors Guild became the fourth of 16 industry-based group to announce the nominations for its own awards since the Emmys were held on Sept. 18. We had already heard from the casting directors (Sept. 27), writers (Dec. 5) and cinematographers (Dec. 6). The other dozen guilds and societies will announce those in contention for their annual kudos in a hectic five-week period beginning Jan. 3.

Because these awards are voted on by people who work in television production and are likely to be members of the TV academy, they preview the Emmys far better than the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Awards, which are decided by journalists.

Oscars 2017 calendar: Deadlines and dates for guilds

Since the Critics’ Choice Awards starting recognizing achievements in television seven years ago, it has previewed just one Emmy winner for Best Comedy Series. Likewise, the Golden Globes has also aligned with the Emmys for top laffer just once in the last seven years. But the Producers Guild of America has done so a staggering five times.

The PGA nominees are of particular interest this year because that guild is in the process of switching its eligibility period from that of the Emmys (June to May) to the calendar year. This will bring it in line both with its own calendar for the film nominees as well as most of the other guilds. To make this change, the PGA is using a special 18-month eligibility period this year only (June 2015 to Dec. 2016)

This means reigning Emmy champ “Game of Thrones” will compete against its time slot replacement “Westworld” for Best Drama Series at the PGA. But we won’t see these series go head-to-head at the Emmys until summer 2018 as “Game of Thrones” won’t air new episodes till this summer. This change also means that PGA voters will be considering two full seasons of the likes of “Mr. Robot” and “Orange is the New Black.”

Below, the dates of both the nominations and ceremonies for all  16 industry guilds and societies that recognize achievements in television, along with the varying eligibility period for each group. All of these groups also laud achievements in film, but do not necessarily announce those nominations on the same dates.

Note that the official abbreviations are not always intuitive; for example, although the Society of Operating Cameramen changed their name to the Society of Camera Operators, their awards remain “SOC.” Also note that not every guild is represented at the Emmys; for example, there is no Emmy Award for Best Camera Operating.
