SAG nominations reactions: Forum posters rave about Sterling K. Brown, rant about ‘La La Land’ snub

The Screen Actors Guild nominations sparked strong responses in our forums — their reactions run the gamut from “thrilled” to “disappointed.”

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the morning was the exclusion of “La La Land” in the Best Film Ensemble category. The Oscar frontrunner took a major hit today, as no film has won Best Picture without receiving an Ensemble nomination since “Braveheart” (1995). They were, however, excited about the inclusions of Viggo Mortensen (“Captain Fantastic”) and Emily Blunt (“The Girl on the Train”).

On the TV side, the most enthusiastic support was for double-nominee Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us,” “The People v. O.J. Simpson”) and newcomer Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”).

Milo Kunis: No “La La Land!”

forwardswill: Emily Blunt = Best surprise nominee ever. So thrilled someone recognized her magnificent work.

Manuel Colon: So, the supposed frontrunner for the award ended up snubbed. Can it win the Oscar without a nomination?

kazzie: Viggo Mortensen, hell yeah!

AayanUpadhyaya: Octavia Spencer is really happening isn’t she? Also wow, “Captain Fantastic!” Insane.

GusCruz: LMAO at the “La La Land” snub, which I felt would happen from the start, and didn’t have the guts to actually predict it.

Justmimusicmon: YES “FENCES” AND “MOONLIGHT”!

Bee: Emily Blunt deserves her nomination honestly. The movie was bad but that was her best performance ever.

TV

AayaanUpadhyaya: Wow, leave it to those SAG Awards to shock you with their nods. Riz Ahmed and Sterling K. Brown? Amazing. Bryce Dallas Howard surprises. Travolta snubbed!

forwardswill: Maggie Smith not getting nominated is very disappointing but thrilled for “The Crown.”

Courtney Smith: Wow, some surprises. Finally. Biggest surprises: Sterling K. Brown for “This is Us” — Yes!!! Millie Bobby Brown — Yes!!!

Philip: “Downton” had to be considered the frontrunner, but the strong showing for “Stranger Things” could be a good sign.

AayaanUpadhyaya: TITUSS BURGESS YAAS

Nate: In longform, I am impressed that “The Night Of” broke through here, especially when “Show Me a Hero” did nothing last year, so this should serve it well at next year’s Emmys. In comedy, I am thrilled that Jane Fonda made it alongside Lily Tomlin, making her lifetime achievement award even sweeter. But no “Transparent” in ensemble this year? And in drama, the female category is a complete shock to me. Between this and the Globes list, maybe we are in for some surprises at next year’s Emmys.

TVFan365: Wow did not expect Sterling K. Brown to get the nod for “This Is Us!” Love that they went against the norm this year and nominated a bunch of new shows or shows they haven’t recognized before.

moviefan61794: Double nominations for Sterling K. Brown?! Tituss Burgess! MILLIE BOBBY BROWN!! SAG TV noms are pretty exciting for the first time in a while.
