“It’s so nice to be able to talk about it” admits Sarah Sutherland as we chat via webcam (watch above) about a recent episode of “Veep” which showcased her character, Catherine, the often overlooked daughter of President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) as a documentary filmmaker. “It was a coveted secret that the documentary was actually going to be finished.”
The actress sees Catherine, “in this documentarian role, but she’s not actually very good. It’s an interesting thing where she feels very passionately about everything that she’s talking about. Yet that passion filtered through Catherine is very muted and very dim. It was an interesting balance.”
Sutherland reveals, “When this episode was cut together it was an hour and ten minutes. There was a lot of material generated. For me, I got to be on the other side of the camera doing interviews. So I got private improv shows from each of the actors. They were hilarious and it was a master class in improvisation.”
This season also saw Catherine enter a relationship with a Secret Service agent who bears a striking resemblance to her mother. Sutherland explains, “that she falls in love with the body double of her mother says she’s trying to have some corrective emotional experience. She’s trying to heal from her relationship with her mother. I loved that grey area thing that the audience gets to see.”
