“Sausage Party” may not be typical awards fare, but this hilarious R-rated animated movie is now the Oscar discussion for Best Animated Feature. Thanks to the vision of producers/writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, “Sausage Party” is about so much more than the title suggests, as the film dives into deep issues like race, religion and sexuality. Gold Derby recently chatted with Rogen and Goldberg, as well as co-director Conrad Vernon and composer/songwriter Alan Menken. Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg interview: “It had to be an idea that we were extremely passionate about because it probably was harder to make and took more of our time and energy than any movie we’ve ever made.”
Conrad Vernon interview: “This could actually be a very funny movie, [but] it was just really simple jokes about food. We realized quickly that we couldn’t fill 80 minutes with that, so that’s when we started fleshing out the world a little bit more.”
Alan Menken interview: “I didn’t know what to expect. We went to the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ place. We were being very clever, and rhyme oriented. I had three counter-melodies, and of course, a lot of profanity.”
