This still-untitled film depicts Lando as a sort of bad boy who’s rising up in the ranks in the seedy part of the galaxy. It takes place decades before the character was first seen in “Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” (1980) and before he became a hero to the rebellion in “Episode VI: Return of the Jedi” (1983). The iconic Billy Dee Williams originated the role of Lando, but there’s no word yet on whether he or Harrison Ford (the original Han) will be a part of this new film.

“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said upcoming “Star Wars” directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller about Glover who’s currently writing, directing and starring in FX’s “Atlanta,” the most critically acclaimed TV show of 2016. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

Disney acquired the rights to the “Star Wars” franchise in 2012 and released “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015 to critical acclaim and a staggering $2 billion at the worldwide box office. That’s a tough act to follow, but this winter’s first stand-alone film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (due out December 16) will hope to achieve the same success.

“Rogue One” is set between the events of “Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” and “Episode IV: A New Hope” and tells the story of the Rebel mission to steal the plans for the Galactic Empire’s Death Star. Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (“The Theory of Everything”) leads the team of rebels, and the new trailer also reveals Mads Mikkelsen as her mysterious father. Joining them are a multicultural ensemble cast that includes Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.
